Time and again, we find ourselves consuming the same narratives and stories on current affairs. Although we’ve grown more aware of this in recent years, we often forget that our understandings of global events and histories have real consequences for our quality of response to domestic and world issues.
Considering the state of our current political climate, it is important for us now more than ever to not only question the narratives we are fed, but to fill the gaps in our knowledge by exposing ourselves to alternative readings of history, while shedding light on the narratives of those who have been poorly represented in our media, or silenced entirely.
Disregarding these readings is no longer a viable option. If progress is what we want to achieve, there must be a willingness to use these perspectives to piece together the bigger puzzle; to understand what went wrong in the past and to ensure a better future for all. In actuality, regardless of your presumptions, or my own for that matter, it is these perspectives that are continuing to shape our political landscape.
It was with this in mind that Words of Solidarity was born; to overcome these obscurities, in solidarity with those whose perspectives have been unheard, minimised, or forgotten; to hear new points of view and challenge existing ones on the most pressing issues of today. I hope that this effort will not only inspire me, but others in their pursuit of the truth behind big media headlines, and bring us closer to a new, concerted effort to educate ourselves on the suppressed, their histories and their lands.
